How the CRS score works
Express Entry ranks candidates with the Comprehensive Ranking System — a 1,200-point scale built from four blocks: core human capital (age, education, language, Canadian experience — up to 500 points), spouse factors (up to 40), skill transferability (combinations of education, language and experience — up to 100), and additional points (provincial nomination, French, Canadian study, a sibling in Canada — up to 600).
IRCC invites the top-ranked candidates in regular draws. General draws in 2025 have hovered in the low-to-mid 500s, while category-based draws — French speakers, healthcare, trades, STEM — often invite at lower scores. Check the latest cut-offs on IRCC's rounds of invitations page before drawing conclusions from any single draw.
What moves your score the most
Language: going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 can add 50+ points once skill-transferability combinations kick in. It's usually the fastest, cheapest gain — retake the test.
Age: maximum points from 20–29; you lose roughly 5–6 points per year after 30. Apply early.
Provincial nomination: +600 points — effectively a guaranteed invitation. Each province runs its own streams.
French: up to +50 additional points, plus access to French-category draws with much lower cut-offs.
A master's degree: jumps education points and improves transferability combinations.
FAQs
What CRS score do I need in 2025?
Above 500 is competitive for general draws; category-based draws can invite below that. A provincial nomination (+600) all but guarantees an invitation at any base score.
Did job offers stop counting?
Yes. Since March 2025, arranged employment no longer adds CRS points. Job offers still matter for some PNP streams and work permits.
How do I raise a 450 score?
In order of impact: retake your language test aiming for CLB 9+, add French, pursue a provincial nomination, or complete a Canadian credential. Also plan your take-home pay with our Canada Income Tax Calculator.
Is this the official calculator?
No — it implements IRCC's published points tables for estimation. Your official score is computed by IRCC when you submit your Express Entry profile.
